Demonstrating the Proper Timing and Application of a Desiccant on Red Clover Seed Crops

Project Objectives: Reglone is the only registered desiccant for use on red clover seed production. It typically takes longer than anticipated to dry down the crop enough for harvest. Evaluation and Demonstration of different application methods (water volume and rate) will provide insight into reducing the time needed to desiccate the crop.

Project Rationale: Red clover is the largest forage seed crop other than alfalfa in Saskatchewan. Red clover is often the last forage seed crop to be harvested and is sometimes left out over winter due to poor harvest weather. Red clover seed crops are often desiccated to speed dry down to enable harvest. It typically takes longer than anticipated to dry down the crop enough for harvest. The evaluation and demonstration of different application methods will benefit growers by speeding dry down and harvest as well as improve seed yield and reduce the risk of making improper applications of expensive products.
