Current Research Projects: Agriculture Development Fund sponsored research co-funded by Saskatchewan Forage Seed Development Commission

The following projects are in various stages of completion.

  1. Integrated Management Approach to Optimize Red Clover Seed Production in Saskatchewan, # 2017007, a 3-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Sean Prager University of Saskatchewan (UofS), with collaborators: Mr. Eric Johnson, Dr. Bill Biligetu, and Dr. Christian Willenberg (UofS). Project completed. Results were published in a graduate student thesis (Dan Malamura, UofS) and in a peer-reviewed journal. Knowledge was applied to improve pest control strategies for the lesser clover leaf weevil (see ADOPT 20190436).

  2. Enhancing seed and biomass production and drought tolerance of plains rough fescue using novel seed treatments #20180173, a 3-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Yuguang Bai (UofS), with collaborators: Drs.: Bill Biligetu, (UofS), Michael Schellenberg, (AAFC-Swift Current Research and Development Centre, SK), and Bruce Coulman, (UofS).  Final report in preparation.

  3. Evaluation of forage Galega (Galega orientalis LAM.) as a new forage legume in pure and grass-legume mixed stands #20180184, a 3-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Bill Biligetu, UofS, with collaborators: Dr. Nityananda Khanal (AAFC-Beaverlodge, AB), Allan Foster, (Saskatchewan Agriculture), and Dr. Jillian Bainard ,(AAFC-Swift Current Research and Development Centre, SK).   4. Doubled haploidy methodology for the forage grasses #20180351, a 4-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Alison Ferrie, National Research Council Canada (NRC-Saskatoon), with collaborators: Dr. Bill Biligetu, and Dr. Bruce Coulman (UofS).   5. Meadow brome and cicer milk vetch variety development for stockpile grazing #20190244, a 5-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Bill Biligetu, UofS, with collaborators: Dr. Surya Acharya, AAFC-Lethbridge, AB), Dr. Bart Lardner (UofS), Dr. Joseph Robins (USDA Logan, Utah), Dr. Bruce Coulman (UofS). In progress.

  6. Hybrid bromegrass with improved digestibility #20190197, a 3-year project led by Principal Investigator Dr. Greg Penner, UofS, with collaborator Dr. Bill Biligetu (UofS). In progress.

  7. Copper fertility and ergot in forage crops #20190322, a 2-year project led by Principal Investigator, Dr. Jillian Bainard, (AAFC-Swift Current Research and Development Centre, SK) with collaborators: Dr. Sean Asselin (AAFC-Swift Current Research and Development Centre, SK), Dr. Jeff Schoenau (UofS), Dr. Jim Menzies (AAFC-Morden, MB), Dr. Bill Biligetu (UofS). This project was deferred and started in 2021. In progress.

  8. Identifying new diversity and developing genomic resources for bromegrass (Bromus spp.) forage crop breeding”, Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) #20200420, a 3-year project led by Principal Investigator, Dr. Andrew Sharpe, Global Institute for Food Security, Saskatoon, SK. In progress.
